550

Presented to the press at the Nürburgring in 1996, the 550 Maranello was Ferrari's answer to all those who believed that a front-engined V12 could never beat a mid-engined sports car.

The successor to the F512M, the 550 Maranello proved faster and, thanks to its improved front engine and rear-wheel drive layout, much more practical.

After more than two decades of Ferrari production marked by the by the performance of a mid-engined model from the classic classic range, the brand took a major turn with the introduction of the 550 Maranello in 1996.

The new model was equipped with a front-engine, like its stablemate, the 456 GT, and drew on the innovations and technological advances developed on that model to combine performance and impeccable roadholding.

Unsurprisingly, the bodywork, designed by Pininfarina, were broadly reminiscent of the new model's 2+2 stablemate, the new model, the 456 GT.

However, the vehicle also a retro nod to earlier classic models, such as the double exhaust vents on the front fenders, similar to those similar to those on the 250 GTO and 275 GTB models of the 60s.

The treatment of the rear lights was even more even more closely resembled that of the legendary 365 GTB/4 "Daytona".

Of course, the new model had its own identity, the wide, shallow radiator air intake, combined with the integrated front spoiler, gave it the appearance of a hungry shark in pursuit of your car as it followed you down the road.
The design details gave it an elegantly aggressive look.

Although initial praise for the vehicle was expected something more visually radical, sceptics of the sceptics were quickly won over by its dynamic qualities

It was, after all, an extremely comfortable and practical 2-seater with ample luggage space and its overall performance was similar to that of the
the basic F40 "street racer" of the previous decade.
